From surface area to usable habitat
Laboratory surface-area claims cannot describe bypass, pore blockage or organic fouling. Mechanical capture before the biological stage helps keep channels open. Media packed so tightly that water routes around it may offer less working habitat than a modest volume arranged for even flow.
Nitrifiers share the biofilm with other organisms. High organic loading can favour faster-growing heterotrophs and alter oxygen availability. That is one reason overfeeding cannot be solved simply by adding another bag of media.
Cycle according to evidence
A fixed number of days is not proof of readiness. Track the ammonia source and test ammonia and nitrite until the system repeatedly processes the intended load. Add livestock gradually because the existing community reflects the previous input.
During maintenance, avoid disinfecting every wet surface or replacing all media together. Rinse obstructed material appropriately, retain established sections and confirm flow after reassembly.
