Feed becomes animal growth, faeces, dissolved nitrogen and oxygen demand in different proportions. Pellet composition, feeding rate, body size and temperature can all alter the result. Counting fish without those variables is a weak engineering measure.

A biological stage adapts over time rather than instantly. Adding many animals, increasing feeding sharply or replacing established media can create a mismatch between production and conversion capacity.

Use records to find the limiting stage

Log approximate feed, livestock changes, cleaning intervals and water tests. Persistent solids point toward transport or mechanical removal; ammonia or nitrite after a load change points toward biological capacity, oxygen or cycling.

Do not treat a large filter as permission to exceed welfare limits. Swimming room, territorial behaviour, oxygen, nitrate export and emergency resilience remain separate constraints.
