How to size an aquarium filter: a five-decision method

Tank volume is a starting coordinate, not a complete filter brief. A useful selection process describes the load and the jobs before it compares product labels.

Write the brief first

Record internal water volume, adult species and number, likely feeding, particle type, oxygen needs and current sensitivity. Add practical constraints: cabinet space, noise, intake safety, power use and how often the mechanical stage can be reached.

This separates genuinely different tanks. A fry system needs a protected intake; a cichlid tank may prioritise robust solids removal; a long planted layout may need several gentle return paths. One litres-per-hour rule cannot express all three.

Commission the choice

Compare flow under head, usable media arrangement, bypass control, priming, spares and cleaning steps. Leave a sensible operating margin for media loading, without assuming that more jet velocity is always beneficial.

After installation, measure return flow and observe debris paths. Track ammonia and nitrite after meaningful load changes. Selection ends only when the installed system demonstrates stable, maintainable performance.
