Internal power filters: compact independence at the cost of tank space

An internal filter keeps pump, media and wet connections inside the aquarium. It simplifies installation but occupies the very volume a small tank has least to spare.

Where simplicity helps

Hospital, quarantine and temporary tanks benefit from a self-contained unit that can be removed. Routine service does not involve siphon hoses, though electrical safety still requires unplugging and inspecting cable and housing.

Media chambers vary widely. A small proprietary cartridge may combine mechanical, chemical and biological functions; replacing it wholesale can remove more biofilm than intended.

Placement is performance

Position the inlet where debris arrives without drawing substrate or animals. Aim the outlet along the long axis, at glass or through a diffuser to use momentum without forcing fish to hold station constantly.

Confirm the manufacturer’s minimum immersion. A motor designed for submerged cooling must not be run exposed during a water change.
